![]() However, this came to an end when Germany declared war on England, and World War I changed Europe. As the aristocracy “epitomized the Edwardian society” (Thomas 2018), they had a lavish lifestyle with enormous tea-parties and dinners. Moreover, the society in the Edwardian era was rigidly divided into the poor, the working class, middle class, upper-middle class, and the upper class, the aristocrats (Thompson 1984: vii-viii). For instance, the income was nearly tax-free, the people could easily travel, and several technological inventions changed their life (ibid.). Nonetheless, some historians expand the era either to World War I (1914-1918) or to 1924 when the Labour party gained parliamentary power (Holland n.d.).ĭespite the majesty of these years, the Edwardian time is “often depicted as a period of luxury in the land of plenty” (ibid.). Her characteristics are of great significance and worth to depict, as Sybil does not represent a typical young woman of the Edwardian upper class: As she helps the maid Gwen to fulfil her dream to become a secretary and she is interested in women’s right, has a strong own opinion about women’s suffrage as well as falls in love with the Irish, rebellious chauffeur of the Crawleys, Tom Branson, she can be perceived as a Suffragette.Įven today the overall subject (women’s rights and the inequality between men and women) is omnipresent as no country worldwide can ensure total equal gender justice in politics, work or in life in general. Sybil is the “champion of women’s rights” (Omakwu 2016) of the British television series Downton Abbey. However, the camera focuses on a young woman: Lady Sybil Crawley. “If you’re so keen on women’s rights, let a woman speak!” (ibid.), a woman calls in between, and the people go berserk. ![]() In front of the mass, a man stands upon a balcony: “Will the summer of 1914 prove as fatal for the hopes of women? This historic by-election can be the first step of the journey to women’s equality!” (Downton Abbey 2010-2015: season 1, episode 6 (in the following S1, E6)).
